Final
Artist Statement:
For my final project, I was inspired to create a small world based on a poem by Jessica Care Moore called "Black Statue of Liberty". To create my this set, I used white foam core and black matboard. I chose different lines within the poem, that I felt were strongest to create a visual representation of them. To photograph my set, I used strobe lights at various angles, and captured photos of every side of the set. In each photo, the black statue, or "mother nature" is present, and is the dominant figure in the composition. In Photoshop I added textures for the statue base, ground and several other objects to make it appear real. I added pictures of Moore and other people mentioned in the poem to be featured inside the pages of the books I crafted. These women include Assata Shakur, Angela Davis, Nikki Giovanni, and Barbara Jordan. I am satisfied with how the images and the set itself turned out, and I feel this is my strongest project of the semester. I feel I represented Jessica Care Moore's poem successfully.
